Dr. Ashley Leal

Scholar of Indigenous studies · Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas

Dr. Ashley Leal is a member of the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas and holds a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where she was awarded the UT System Jess Hay Fellowship. Her master's thesis and her dissertation both centre on her own tribe: identity, and cultural gatherings as a way of teaching.

Her research runs through Indigenous studies, grief, trauma, and the wellbeing of children. She helped build a place-based curriculum with UTRGV's CHAPS Program and contributed to Native People of South Texas.

BringsGrief as something a community carries rather than something a person endures, gathering as pedagogy, and what schools miss about Indigenous children.
